About

School history

Though Fenelon Township Public School (FTPS) was opened in 1967, its history can be traced back to the 1840s with the establishment of the first schools in the area. As populations grew in the mid-19th century, a variety of section schools (SS) were opened in Fenelon Township:

SS 1, Cambray – 1848
SS 2, IIslay – 1855
SS 3, Fenelon Falls – 1848
SS 4, Powles Corners – 1856
SS 5, Zion – 1855
SS 6, Cameron – 1856
SS 7, Pleasant Point (Hay’s School) – 1857
SS 8, Cameron Point (Isaac’s School) – 1860
SS 9, Glenarm – 1866
SS 10, Long Point – 1867
SS 11, Blythe School – 1841 (uncertain)
SS 12, Fell’s School – 1869

In order to accommodate changing populations and educational pedagogy, a number of amalgamations of school sections occurred during the first half of the 20th century. In 1967, SS 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 were consolidated and FTPS opened its doors. The local, one-room schoolhouses were closed and sold. Additions to the current school building over the years have included an extension on the primary wing, the library-resource centre, and the use of four portable classrooms for many years.

A detailed history of the Cameron school can be found in Jim McKechnie’s 1980 M.S. Graduate Studies essay, Cameron School by J. McKechnie. Further information on the history of Fenelon Township’s schools can be found in A History of Fenelon Township, 1987.

School mission

We believe that together we are fostering a community of responsible, resilient global citizens with endless possibilities for success.

Litterless lunches

As part of our school’s continuing improvement plan, we are constantly searching for ways to promote a healthy environment and increase the use of the three R’s – respect, responsibility, and recycling.

One of the initiatives at our school is to promote and encourage “litterless lunches.” The purpose of the initiative is to raise student awareness of the need to reduce the amount of waste we, as a society, generate and to recognize the benefits, both in terms of cost and resources, of using reusable containers, etc. By promoting litterless lunches, we hope that families and students will consider using reusable containers, such as drink containers, plastic water bottles, tupperware containers, etc., in an effort to reduce the amount of waste generated in our school. These items need not be special, fancy, or purchased. Look around in your kitchen cupboard. Perhaps, you already have something that would serve the purpose of holding a drink, as opposed to a juice box, which must be recycled or disposed of. Plastic baggies can be rinsed and reused a number of times. The solutions are meant to be simple and readily at hand for those concerned about our environment.
