King Albert Public School hosts spring festival

On June 6, the King Albert Public School (KAPS) Equity Team hosted their annual after-school festival, with a focus on celebrating National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month.

The festival gave students and their families an opportunity to visit a number of different stations with activities, including making journey sticks, rainbow fruit sticks, and drawing a pride flag with bingo dabbers. They also had the opportunity to add to the rainbow hand wall, and a chance to learn about and take part in smudging. A member from the Trillium Lakelands District School Board Indigenous Student Success Team was also present, giving fry bread out to attendees.

Local community partners including the City of Kawartha Lakes Library, Chimo Youth and Family Services, and The Boys and Girls Club of Kawartha Lakes, were also in attendance to share information with families on the supports available to them.

“We find that hosting these festivals helps us to highlight and celebrate the values, achievements, and partnerships on a regular basis,” said KAPS principal, Darla McQuarrie. “This festival shone a light on the work we are doing to continue to be an inclusive community that celebrates uniqueness amongst our students and their families. We were happy to celebrate both Pride and Indigenous History Month with our students, families, and community partners. The need for connection with families and our community has never been greater and we appreciate all who are willing to support us and celebrate with us. We look forward to additional festivals taking place next school year.”
