Media release: Scott Young Public School sod turning celebration

LINDSAY, ON – On November 9, Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) held a sod turning celebration for the new additions currently underway at Scott Young Public School (SYPS). Representatives from TLDSB were joined by Member of Provincial Parliament Laurie Scott, City of Kawartha Lakes Mayor Doug Elmslie, Deputy Mayor Tracy Richardson, and Councillor of Ward 6 Ron Ashmore, as well as representatives from BBD Architects and Darlen Construction.

Funded by the Government of Ontario Ministry of Education, SYPS will see the addition of a full service child care centre and an EarlyON centre connected to the school. Furthermore, the school will receive an addition of two new Kindergarten classrooms, and an internal renovation to transform three existing classrooms into two more Kindergarten classrooms. This project received the approval to proceed by the Ministry of Education in March 2023.

“It is a wonderful occasion to have this addition in our community,” added TLDSB trustee Judy Saunders, who recognized the pivotal role that communities and families play in education, starting with the community meetings that took place in 2016-2017 when this project was initiated. Judy also noted how the additions will be yet another way of providing for our students.

The staff and administrators were thanked on numerous occasions during the celebration for supporting today’s students, as well as preparing for the needs of students in years to come.

Although not in person at the celebration, Elder and Knowledge Holder, Dorothy Taylor of Curve Lake First Nation shared the following, “In Ojibwe, the word gaamig means building. It is our belief that a building is a living entity, so in essence what you are doing here today is adding life to your school. I congratulate everyone involved in this great event. Miigwech!”

Once this project is complete and ready to accept students, the Lady Eaton Elementary School students will join the SYPS community. Bringing these two schools together will enhance programming and learning opportunities available for students.
